Morning Meeting:
Foundation Day
Please join us this Wednesday morning at 7:30am in the Kitchi Gammi Club Great Hall (831 E Superior St, Duluth, MN 55802) as we raise money and give back during our annual Rotary Foundation Day!

November 1st will be the day this year that Harbortown Rotary shows its support of the Rotary Foundation with our Annual Foundation Day. We all became Rotarians to make a difference in our community and throughout the world. The Rotary Foundation is the mechanism through which much of this happens. The funds we donate on November 1st will honor new individuals with Paul Harris Fellowships and the funds will go directly to the Rotary Foundation.

On Foundation Day, you will hear a brief overview of a few projects the Rotary Foundation has accomplished to help those in need all around the world. We will also hear from fellow Harbortown Rotarian, Karl Everett, who will share about his very recent trip to Bolivia.

Let Amber Sadowski know who you would like to honor with a Paul Harris Fellowship. We will be making new members Paul Harris Fellows. Often Rotarians will also nominate family members, friends, or individuals who have made a positive impact on our community. Please let me know as soon as possible.  If you will not be at the meeting on November 1st, please let Amber know ahead of time how much you would be willing to contribute on behalf of new Paul Harris fellows.

It is our hope that all those impacted by the Rotary Foundation can count on you with your financial support. Our goal is that every Rotarian gives a minimum of $100 per year to the Rotary Foundation. That is less than $2 per week. You can pay by check, credit card, or set up a recurring payment plan to automatically deduct your contribution.  Visit rotary.org to set this up and learn more about the Foundation. Be sure to list your Rotary ID shown on the form in your email from Amber if you donate online so that you and Harbortown Rotary are informed of your contribution!

November 1st will be a fun fast-paced day of giving at our meeting.  We will honor individuals with Paul Harris Fellows. We will learn more about the Rotary Foundation AND our goal is to raise approximately $15,000 for the Rotary Foundation.

Thank you in advance for your contribution to the Rotary Foundation and for making a commitment to making a difference in the world.

Yours in Rotary Service.

More than 700,000 people die by suicide each year, according to the World Health Organization. While there is no simple solution, Rotary clubs around the world are supporting the work of mental health providers and taking other actions. In this issue of Rotary magazine, we introduce you to members who have dedicated themselves to this cause, often after suffering their own loss. Then, in our Handbook section, find out how you can be a mental health ally.

Click here to read the November 2023 issue. The link will take you to your digital copy, which you can read using any common web browser.

Also this month, we return to Singapore to explore the 2024 Rotary International Convention city's rich culinary landscape. From street food to ethnic eateries to Michelin-starred restaurants, Singapore's food scene is a celebration if its multicultural identity. Be sure to register for the convention and experience it for yourself. Don't wait; the deadline for the early registration discount is 15 December.

And finally, we catch up with a former Rotary Youth Exchange student now serving as Canada's ambassador to Japan. Looking back on a distinguished career, Ian McKay says it all started with Rotary.

Notice of Rotary Meal Fee Increase
Dear Harbortown Rotarians -

During the October 2023 board meeting, the Harbortown Rotary Board of Directors unanimously voted to increase meal rates from $12 to $15. This is the first increase since 2020 and is in response to the club absorbing the $6,000  difference between actual meal costs and dues collected for meals. Our actual meal cost is around $22 per meal after tax and gratuity are added to our weekly invoice.

You will see the new meal rates included in your next quarterly invoice, effective July 1, 2023.

Finally, this rate increase will not cover the meal gap entirely by itself. With that said, I will be reaching out to Rule of 85 members separately to discuss further potential changes moving forward.

If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to call or email me.

Best Regards,

Tony Hansen

If you are unable to confirm a speaker, please contact Rick Oase (rickoase@yahoo.com) or Stephanie Judd (sljudd@gmail.com) for help, consider other program ideas like a Ted Talk, presenting yourself on a relevant topic or your business, or creating some excitement for a community organization you are passionate about. It is your program, so think about what is interesting and engaging to you and share it with others!

If for some reason you are unable to switch duties with another member or you have simply exhausted all efforts to find a speaker, please notify Rick or Stephanie no later than 3 business days before the meeting (the Friday before the meeting your program is scheduled).

Harbortown Rotary has a Windows 11 laptop at the Kitchi Gammi Club for weekly Harbortown meetings. Presenters may bring a USB drive with the PowerPoint presentation (or whatever is wanted to be shown on the projector while speaking). Please share this information with your program's presenter.
