"What is Forensic Engineering?"
Every day, a house catches fire, an accident happens on the job, or something simply breaks. When this happens, people want to know why? They want to know why to prevent it from happening again because – accidents are expensive! Those who are responsible for paying for those accidents - such as insurance companies will contact an expert and ask that expert to determine why something “broke”. Then they will then ask, “who is responsible?” Often it is a Forensic Engineer who will be called on to examine why something broke and who is responsible. With that the litigation starts!
This program gives a peak into the kind of incidents the speaker has been involved in and what Forensic Engineering is all about.
Andy Thielen is a Principal for ESi. He is an accomplished Mechanical Engineer with more than 39 years of experience in the following areas: Construction Management with an understanding of the roles and duties of each participant in the construction process, and HVAC systems which includes plumbing, humidity control, district heating, and cooling systems, in residential, commercial and industrial settings. He provides expert consultation to the construction industry, primarily in terms of HVAC, plumbing, district heating, and cooling systems. In addition, he was the primary editor of the State of Minnesota Commercial Energy, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Building Codes used in Minnesota from 2008 to 2014. Andy also performs failure analysis.

Cherished past president and dedicated member of Harbortown Rotary, Paul Damberg's Celebration of Life will be held April 13 12 - 4 at Pike Lake Golf & Beach Club, 4895 Midway Road, Duluth. Paul's commitment to service and community has left an indelible mark on all who knew him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Paul's family and friends during this difficult time. As we remember and celebrate his life, let us continue to honor his memory through our ongoing commitment to service and community.
Stella Marais Interact visited Harbortown Rotary last Wednesday, hosted by their Rotary Sponsor, Christian Koelling. In their first year, Stella Marais Interact has raised funds for a teacher with cancer and Duluth's local Ronald McDonald house, and they are currently hosting Penny Wars to raise funds for Chum’s food bank.

We are planning the Great Bolivia adventure for September 13th - 21st, 2025 and I have several candidates from our club who may be interested in joining us. Also, I heard from some members in our club who would like to work on and complete a service project. I spoke with Dr. Jose, and he provided several options to work two or three days on Bolivia projects, possible Anchallani clinic or another clinic. He currently has a group from Idaho who is planning to work on a similar service project. The primary challenge is that our Rotary workers would need a comfortable place to stay while they are working on the project. One solution is to work at a project near Cochabamba or at the Mano a Mano office in Cochabamba where they construct furniture for their projects.
