Please join us this Wednesday morning at 7:30am in the Kitchi Gammi Club Great Hall (831 E Superior St, Duluth, MN 55802) as we hear from our very own Karl Everett about his most recent trip to Bolivia on behalf of Harbortown Rotary and our International Committee!
Karl Everett is from Duluth, MN and has over 30 years of experience as an engineer, geologist, and consultant. Karl has a M.S. degree in Engineering from the University of Idaho and a B.S. degree in Geology from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. He volunteers as a member of Rotary International and has served as Rotary District 5580 Water and Sanitation Chairperson, District 5580 Grants Committee, and Harbortown Rotary Duluth International Committee.
The Great Bolivia Adventure 2013 to 2023
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”
- Mark Twain
Karl will provide an update on Rotary District 5580 Bolivia projects. Harbortown Rotary has worked on Rotary District 5580 medical clinics, water wells, schools, roads, and water reservoirs working with Mano a Mano Bolivia and International Partners from high in Andes Mountain range in the Cordillera Real Mountains to low in the Amazon Rain Forest in Bolivia. Bolivia has over 600 mountain peaks over 16,000 feet. Karl has been working on projects in rural, mountainous regions to help the indigenous Quechua Indians who are the direct descendants of the Incas. Side trips included visiting La Paz, Lake Titicaca, Inca ruins at Tiwanaku, and previous trips to Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flats, where the Atlantic Ocean was trapped behind the rising Andes mountain range in geologic time. Rock climbing, spelunking, and dinosaur hunting in Toro Toro National Park. Exploring the jungle looking for wildlife, including sloths, caiman (alligators), jaguars, anaconda, S. American condors and other birds, and crossing the Rio Mamoré and exploring the Amazon Rain Forest west of Trinidad!

November 1st was Rotary Foundation Day! We all became Rotarians to make a difference in our community and throughout the world. The Rotary Foundation is the mechanism through which much of this happens.
If you were not at the November 1st meeting, please let Amber Sadowski know how much you would like to contribute on behalf of new Paul Harris fellows! Our goal is for every Rotarian gives a minimum of $100 per year to the Rotary Foundation - less than $2 per week! You can pay by check, credit card, or set up a recurring payment plan to automatically deduct your contribution. Visit rotary.org to set this up and learn more about the Foundation. Please make sure to include your personal Rotary ID and the Club ID in your donation.
Thank you for your contribution to the Rotary Foundation and for making a commitment to making a difference in the world!
More than 700,000 people die by suicide each year, according to the World Health Organization. While there is no simple solution, Rotary clubs around the world are supporting the work of mental health providers and taking other actions. In this issue of Rotary magazine, we introduce you to members who have dedicated themselves to this cause, often after suffering their own loss. Then, in our Handbook section, find out how you can be a mental health ally.

Also this month, we return to Singapore to explore the 2024 Rotary International Convention city's rich culinary landscape. From street food to ethnic eateries to Michelin-starred restaurants, Singapore's food scene is a celebration if its multicultural identity. Be sure to register for the convention and experience it for yourself. Don't wait; the deadline for the early registration discount is 15 December.
And finally, we catch up with a former Rotary Youth Exchange student now serving as Canada's ambassador to Japan. Looking back on a distinguished career, Ian McKay says it all started with Rotary.
Use the Google Photos link below to share them with us, so we can spread the word about how awesome our members are and the impact we're making on our community!

If for some reason you are unable to switch duties with another member or you have simply exhausted all efforts to find a speaker, please notify Rick or Stephanie no later than 3 business days before the meeting (the Friday before the meeting your program is scheduled).
