Morning Meeting:
Dr. Charles Nies, UMD Chancellor
Join us Wednesday morning at 7:30am in the Great Hall - Kitchi Gammi Club (831 E Superior St., Duluth, MN 55802) as we hear from Dr. Charles Nies, UMD Chancellor

Charles Nies, PhD, is the 10th chancellor of the University of Minnesota Duluth. Nies brings over 25 years of experience in higher education, most recently serving as vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of California, Merced. One of 10 campuses in the University of California system, UC Merced was formed in 2005 and became the youngest university in the nation to earn the Carnegie R2 designation — the second highest classification for American research universities. Nies joined UC Merced in 2006 as its first associate vice chancellor and dean of students, a role in which he oversaw the development and growth of student life programs on campus.

Prior to his work at UC Merced, he served as an assistant dean of an interdisciplinary school at Miami University in Ohio and a program director for a minor in leadership studies at Washington State University. As an instructor, he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership theory, organizational theory and student development.

Nies holds two degrees from Washington State University — a doctorate in education administration and leadership and a master’s in counseling psychology. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. He grew up in Hutchinson, Minnesota.

Nies succeeds Interim Chancellor David McMillan, who was in the role through June 2024, and Chancellor Lendley Black, who retired in the summer of 2022.

“I’m honored to be a part of this remarkable institution and to work alongside the amazing people who are advancing the mission of teaching, research, and outreach."
- Charles Nies, PhD, chancellor, University of Minnesota Duluth

Cesarzama Funding Complete!

Our request for donations to our Cesarzama Medical Clinic have been successful! Thank you for your generous donations! Wow! You Rotarians are amazing.  We now have enough funding to complete the project and can initiate construction.  It takes five to six months to construct the project, so it's time to begin planning a future Bolivia adventure to the Bolivia Amazon to visit the clinic, other projects, and some fun sightseeing side trips.

Travel to Bolivia is an amazing experience and I know it has changed how I view the world and other cultures.  We generally travel in the spring or fall, to avoid the rainy season, so it appears possible to begin planning for a trip in March or April 2025.  If you are interested in joining us on a Bolivia International trip, please let Nathan and our international committee know.

World Polio Day
Association

As a leader in Rotary, your dedication to service helps make our work possible. This World Polio Day, we’re relying on people like you to lead the way as we keep working to provide critical funding for vaccination campaigns, public awareness initiatives, and health care infrastructure.

With our supporters, partners, and leaders, we’ve helped immunize more than 3 billion children against polio in 122 countries, and we won’t stop until we end the disease for good.

In preparation for World Polio Day on 24 October, please get involved and encourage your members to do so as well. You can:

By raising awareness and funds on World Polio Day, we can protect children in communities around the world so that they never again suffer the paralyzing effects of this disease. We must remain vigilant and continue our work to immunize up to 400 million children each year. Until polio is eradicated from the world, it remains a threat to children everywhere.

Thank you for your leadership as together, we end polio.

Sincerely,

The Rotary Foundation
