Morning Meeting:
Marshall Junior Rotarians

Join Harbortown Rotary this Wednesday morning at 7:30am in the Great Hall at the Kitchi Gammi Club (831 E Superior St, Duluth, MN 55802) as we hear from the Marshall Junior Rotarians about the Marshall Academic Commons.

The Marshall Academic Commons (MAC) provides individual support and enrichment for students across all academic subjects and is staffed by learning specialists during the school day. All Marshall students have access to the MAC, where they receive guided support for assignments, skills coaching, and overall study support. Students can work on their own or receive one-on-one support.

The Marshall Junior Rotarians' proposed project and grant for $1,000 will be used to purchase new supplies and furniture for the space that will be used by and accessible to all students.

April Fireside Recap

Harbortown Rotary met last Wednesday night for its quarterly Fireside meeting. Below are general highlights and club reminders from the meeting:
  • If you made a pledge for the Rotary Foundation but have not yet paid, please pay now. If you pay online, please make sure you sign-in with your Rotary ID or Harbortown won’t know you have donated and you won’t get credit for your contribution.

  • Harbortown is considering its meeting schedule for the upcoming Rotary year and welcome any suggestions and feedback as we move forward.
    • Should we return to a pre-Covid schedule with morning meetings every week (unless we specifically want a morning service project)?
    • Should we keep the current schedule with a morning off for a service project?
    • Send your suggestions to President Mary and/or President-Elect Tony.

  • Some of the Twin Ports Rotary Clubs are beginning discussion about a Rotary Foundation social among the Twin Ports Rotary Clubs – this would NOT be another ask, but a celebration and informational as we all prepare for our Foundation days. This gathering would likely be late October/early November.  It is Harbortown’s turn to host this event. Please let President Mary know if you are interested in helping to plan this event.

Rotary Night at the DSSO

This is a similar event to the Rotary Night at the Duluth Playhouse earlier this year.

Duluth-Superior Eco-Rotary member Mark Niedermier is coordinating tickets; if you are interested, please contact him directly at: mark.niedermier@gmail.com or 218.269.1532. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mary's Corner
Rotary Magazine published a series of conversations with 37 leaders in a variety of fields over a period of 12 years. The full conversations were published in the magazine during that time and produced a summary of the conversations in December 2021. President Mary ends each of Harbortown's regular meetings with a quote from someone involved in those conversations.

The quote from Mary's last meeting as President on June 28th was on empathy from Alex Kotlowitz, Author of "There Are No Children Here: An American Summer."

"Empathy is central to who we are as human beings. I talk about it as the centripetal force of storytelling. It's also the centripetal force of community. It's what holds us together; it's what binds us. It's part of what we are as humans, but it takes some effort. It's not as if we're naturally inclined to think of ourselves as somebody else. It takes a leap of imagination."

Alex Kotlowitz | Penguin Random House

Keep remembering our theme for this past year - Imagine Rotary as we move into the new Rotary year and Create Hope in the World!

It has been an incredible honor to serve as your President this year, and I thank all of you for letting me serve as your President this year. Thank you for your support and encouragement all year.

Have a good week. Reach out to members that you haven't seen in a while. Let them know that you miss them and encourage them to join us in a morning meeting, service project, or social event. Be kind to yourself and to those around you.

Past President Mary

Join Harbortown Rotary on a trip of a lifetime to Cochabamba, Bolivia! October 19-29, 2023.
The estimated total cost of the trip will be dependent on the side adventures the group chooses to take (between ~$1,600 to ~$2,400 total, plus travel expenses to Miami, Florida). Harbortown's International Committee has money set aside for those interested in the adventure: $500 to those who have taken a trip before and $750 travel voucher for first timers.

Throughout this journey, you will see projects that accomplished our original vision and so much more.

What is Mano a Mano International? A grass-roots non-profit organization based in St. Paul, MN whose mission is to create partnerships that improve health and increase economic well-being.
Who can go on this trip? Adults and children accompanied by a parent or guardian are welcome.
Where will we stay? Comfortable and clean hotels.
Where will we go? Bolivia’s third largest city, Cochabamba, located in the Andes at 8,000 feet above sea level, and rural communities that tourists rarely visit.
