Join us Wednesday morning, 7:30am in the Great Hall at the Kitchi Gammi Club (831 E. Superior St., Duluth, MN 55802)! We will here from Patty Salo Downs, Executive Director of the Alworth Memorial Fund.
2023 represents the 74th Anniversary of the Marshall H. and Nellie Alworth Scholarship program! Over the past 74 years, the Alworth Memorial Fund has granted a total of $55 million in scholarships to more than 5,400 students in Northeastern Minnesota. As of 2022, there are over 250 active recipients in the Alworth Scholarship program. These scholarships are supported by the Marshall W. Alworth Trust which is presently valued at $48 million. Students selected for the 2024 scholarships will be $24,000 ($6,000 per year)!
Ms. Salo Downs began her professional career with ALLETE/Minnesota Power in 1978 fulfilling many roles, including the Special Events Coordinator until 2002 when she went to the University of MN Duluth as the Director of Development. From 2003 – 2010, Salo Downs worked as a Conference Coordinator for the Association for Consumer Psychology and the Association for Consumer Research. In 2006, she joined the Alworth Memorial Fund as their Executive Director. Since then, she has served in this role, administering a family foundation that awards over $1.2 million in scholarship funds annually to 250 college students majoring in mathematics, science, engineering, and medical fields of study.
During the October 2023 board meeting, the Harbortown Rotary Board of Directors unanimously voted to increase meal rates from $12 to $15. This is the first increase since 2020 and is in response to the club absorbing the $6,000 difference between actual meal costs and dues collected for meals. Our actual meal cost is around $22 per meal after tax and gratuity are added to our weekly invoice.
You will see the new meal rates included in your next quarterly invoice, effective July 1, 2023.
Finally, this rate increase will not cover the meal gap entirely by itself. With that said, I will be reaching out to Rule of 85 members separately to discuss further potential changes moving forward.
If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to call or email me.
Use the Google Photos link below to share them with us, so we can spread the word about how awesome our members are and the impact we're making on our community!

The Harbortown Rotary Longevity Study Group will meet exactly 3 times. We will accommodate dates and times such that those who want to participate can participate.
The key Longevity planning question is this: “How can I make my potential 100+year life the most fulfilling it can be?" (No guarantees of getting to 100, of course.) The result of participating in these sessions is that you will have established a list of goals for flourishing in the Longevity Revolution. As such, you will be well on your way to completing a holistic Personal Longevity Plan for yourself.
The only cost is the cost of the book Join the Longevity Revolution ($15) and whatever you order for drinks at the Kitchi Gammi Club. So, if you are interested in participating in this 3-Session Harbortown Rotary Longevity Study Group, please let me know soon.
Words of wisdom: Don't bet against science. The Human Gnome Project was completed two decades ago. Gene editing, epigentic editing, and removal of senescent cells are the future scientific breakthroughs that await us in the next 10 to 20 years.

Thank you for being a dedicated member of our Rotary community. Without all your work on Rotary’s behalf and your commitment to our mission, Rotary would not be a global leader in building peace throughout the world and finding common ground in our humanity.
Rotary is, above all, a collective effort, and we rely on members like you to help us understand how we can improve and grow in the future. This survey is your opportunity to tell us whether Rotary is meeting your expectations.
To complete the survey, please click on the link below. It will take only 5 to 10 minutes and will provide us with invaluable information about your experience in Rotary.
This is your personal link, and all your fellow members should have received their own.
If you have questions about the survey, write to surveys@rotary.org. And if you are interested in the results from previous years, you can find them on the Rotary Research page of My Rotary.
Thank you for helping us make Rotary better, together.
Sincerely,
R. Gordon R. McInally Präsident 2023/24 Rotary International
In public health, you don't see what you don't look for. So polio and other disease hunters run vast surveillance operations. In this issue of Rotary magazine, we take you to a largely hidden frontline in the fight against polio. Learn how this detective work is done, including its decidedly unglamorous side (one key to helping ensure a polio-free world is poop). Then, be part of history and help us build awareness on World Polio Day on 24 October.

This past July saw the hottest global average temperature in about 125,000 years, according to scientists. In another of this month's features, we take stock of a season of heat, fire, and floods, and how Rotary members are responding to aid victims of climate disasters.
And finally, we bring you two stories — one in photos, one in words — celebrating Rotary Youth Exchange, which has been promoting international understanding for nearly 50 years. Three students share their exciting year in Brazil. And journalist Sharon Basco reflects on the youth exchange that helped launch her career.

It is your program, so think about what is interesting and engaging to you and share it with others!
If for some reason you are unable to switch duties with another member or you have simply exhausted all efforts to find a speaker, please notify Rick or Stephanie no later than 3 business days before the meeting (the Friday before the meeting your program is scheduled).
