Kelly Krieg-Sigman, The Brain Game Project
Join us this Wednesday, August 24th at 7:30am at the Kitchi Gammi Club, Great Hall - 2nd Floor, 831 E Superior St, Duluth, MN 55802! We will hear from Kelly Krieg-Sigman on the Brain Game book and program.
Kelly Krieg-Sigman served as a library manager for over 32 years and recently retired from the La Crosse Public Library after serving as director there for 16 years. Ms. Krieg-Sigman will present on the background and history of the Brain Game project and discuss how and why this project could be implemented in the Twin Ports.
The Brain Game was born when the Director of the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families spoke to the Rotary Club of La Crosse, WI. She was excited to spread the new research into early child brain development - scientists discovered that proper stimulation of children during the first three years of life can play a huge role in growing a healthy brain. Interested in getting this information to parents, a coalition was formed that included pediatricians, early childhood development experts, neonatologists,two major medical centers, local schools, and parenting resource agencies. Two years of research and three editions later, the book is provided to new parents for free thanks to generous partnerships throughout the midwest. 
2022 Lake Superior Dragon Boats Volunteer Opportunities 
There are a number of remaining open spots for volunteering at the 2022 Lake Superior Dragon Boats Festival still available!

Primary areas of need are:
1. Dock (assisting holding the boats, and helping paddlers in and out of the boats) and Team Marshalling/Paddles/Vests area (where teams line up, get life vests, paddles, and assemble prior to getting called out to the dock). The dock are is more physical but is an active fun area to be around. Vests and Paddle area is somewhat less strenuous but still fun being around the teams.  (Saturday time periods: 8:00am-1:00pm, 1:00pm-6:00pm; time frames are maximums.)
2. Driving the Senior Connections vans. There are 3 vans that help transport paddlers, spectators, handicap persons, people needing/wanting to ride from the parking area on the grass onto the island area. Vans are air conditioned. Shifts are likely shorter than stated; all 3 vans do not need to run the entire time. (Friday: 5:00pm-10:00pm, Saturday: 8:30am-3:00pm, 3:00pm-8:00pm.) 
3. Parking/Traffic Flow. Parking is free on the grassy hill region off the island. There are opportunities to direct traffic, direct pedestrians, allow a few people with passes into the vendor/mini golf region where there is extremely limited parking, and direct hotel/marina guests past this area. (Friday: 2:00pm-6:00pm, 6:00pm-10:00pm; Saturday: 7:00am-11:00am, 11:00am-3:00pm, 3:00pm-7:00pm.)
4. Set Up, Tear Down, and Everything in Between! There are many great beverages and food along with volunteer lunch and T-Shirts.

Hello Volunteers for the Shoot for Fun! 
The 2022 Annual Shoot for Fun is quickly approaching! Thank you to those of you who have already signed up to and/or volunteered in the past. Watch our video to see what you are supporting!  Please remember – no matter how much you know about Courage Kenny Northland or how long you have been with us, you are a vital part of the team of 100+ volunteers who make this event possible and we are proud to welcome you among the 500 participants who will be attending. Thank you! 
There are still open volunteer spots please check them out here! As of this very moment, 5 volunteers at trap stations on the main course (sit in lawn chair, push the button when shooter says ‘pull’) and 5 volunteers for the afternoon shift in the Prize Tent, as well as a few other openings are still needed! Please ask your friends and family to join you in volunteering – I am happy to work with you so you can volunteer in the same area.
FRIDAY, SEPT. 9 – Event Set Up and Orientation
* Event Set-Up 2:00pm - Help with setup tasks (setting up tables/chairs/banners).
* Volunteer Orientation & Dinner 5:30pm – 7:30pm: Required for volunteers who will be working a shooting station; optional for returning volunteers and non-shooting station volunteers. Dinner at 5:30 in the club house, orientation to follow. Please RSVP if you haven’t already done so for an accurate plate count.  Volunteers will tour the shooting preserve grounds, so dress accordingly. Please park at the Clubhouse.  
SATURDAY, SEPT. 10 – Annual Shoot for Fun
* Volunteer Check-In 7:45am: Check in no later than 7:45am on Saturday, unless scheduled for an earlier or later shift. Golf cart rides are available if needed.
* Always check in at the volunteer tent when you arrive and leave or if your assignment changes, so all stations are covered at all times. If there are too many volunteers at a station, please check in to see if there is a need for help elsewhere. The volunteer roster changes constantly and we do our best to spread volunteers throughout the event evenly. Your gift of time is recognized, and we want to make sure it is well utilized. 
* Parking for volunteers on Saturday - Drive approximately 4 miles down Old Vermilion Trail (dirt road) you will see a parking sign on your right at the first gate of the shooting preserve. If you need accessible parking, drive straight to the clubhouse.
All volunteers must sign a waiver and media release. Complimentary lunch, dinner and beverages are provided. If you have dietary restrictions please bring your own meals.

Hello Harbortown Rotarians - Due to club feedback and high meeting turnout, we will no longer be asking for RSVPs for morning meetings. Mary's Corner

Rotary Magazine published a series of conversations with 37 leaders in a variety of fields over a period of 12 years. The full conversations were published in the magazine during that time and produced a summary of the conversations in December 2021. President Mary ends each of Harbortown's regular meetings with a quote from someone involved in those conversations.

The quote from October 26th meeting was about polio from Aiden O'Leary, Polio Eradication Director for the World Health Organization. This quote is particularly relevant because this year's Rotary theme is "Imagine Rotary."

"There's something about the whole idea of eradicating polio that grabs the imagination. Most people talk about making steps toward achievements, and it's almost always into the never never. Eradication is a zero sum game - anything short of zero is failure. You keep getting closer and closer, but ultimately the only number that actually matters is zero."

If you have an upcoming program duty (please check the upcoming duty roster), please be sure to secure a speaker and provide notice to Chloe Strand ( as soon as that speaker is confirmed. If you are unable to confirm a speaker, please contact Rick Oase ( or Stephanie Judd ( for help, consider other program ideas like a Ted Talk, presenting yourself on a relevant topic or your business, or creating some excitement for a community organization you are passionate about. It is your program, so think about what is interesting and engaging to you and share it with others! 
If for some reason you are unable to switch duties with another member or you have simply exhausted all efforts to find a speaker, please notify Rick or Stephanie no later than 3 business days before the meeting (the Friday before the meeting your program is scheduled).
President Mary Durward is bringing her laptop to the Kitchi Gammi Club for weekly Harbortown meetings. Presenters may bring a USB drive with the PowerPoint presentation (or whatever is wanted to be shown on the projector while speaking). Please share this information with your program's presenter.
